What are the Pinal County Library District’s 3M Cloud Library lending settings?

  • 3 books can be checked out at a time.
  • 21-day checkout period per book (returns automatically on your account at the end of this time).
  • Early return available on mobile apps.
  • Renewal of a book is not available, but you may check out the book again (on mobile app or reading directly on the computer, your place should have been saved by the system).
  • 3 holds allowed at a time (realize that with the checkout limit you may have to make a decision if a bunch of your books are available at once).
  • 3 days to check out a book on hold that comes available to you.

What is a Cloud Library?

It is a mobile technology that allows you to browse, checkout and read titles on your personal eReader or tablet.

Do I need to create an account specifically for the Cloud Library?

No, the Cloud Library will use your existing library account; there is no need to create a separate account.

How do I log-in to the Cloud Library?

Your log-in information is:

  • Library ID: your Pinal County library card number (14 digits with no spaces)
  • Library PIN/Password: The PIN or password you use to log-in to your account in the Catalog.

Your account must be in good standing to use this service – if you have an overdue book or any blocks on your account, you will not be able to log-in. If you have any questions about your library account, please contact your local library.

How do I browse and check out a book? How do I find a book to check out right now?

After you have logged into the Cloud Library simply browse the collections using the Shelves, Categories, or Search functions to find and click on a title. Then you can “Checkout” or “Add to Hold List” to reserve a title. Once the title is available you can checkout and read the book within any of the applications.

If you are looking for a book that you want to read immediately, follow these instructions:

  • Click on the "Categories" tab.
  • Look for a "Filter" or "Advanced Filter" button (top, right), click this.
  • Select "Books available to check out."

This will filter out any book that is not available to be checked out right now. You may browse the categories from here.

How do I know that it is my turn for a hold?

3M does not have an email notification system yet. At this time, it is up to you to be aware of the status of your holds. You have 72 hours to check out a hold once it becomes available to you, so we recommend checking your app or software every 2 days when you are waiting on a hold. Please remember that the number of days listed for your hold is an estimate based on the number of copies the library has and the maximum checkout of 21 days. If someone ahead of you in line returns the book early, the list will move faster.

How can I renew a book?

Right now, the Cloud Library doesn’t have a renewal functionality built in. If a book is on hold it will automatically transfer to the next patron in the queue. If the book is not on hold the patron can go through the check out process again.

Why do I have to wait for an eBook? Aren’t these virtual?

Libraries have to purchase an eBook in the same way they purchase physical books. The publishers require us to abide by a “one copy/one user” model just as we do with physical books. For example, if your library has one copy of Gone Girl and it is already checked out you would have to place this item on your hold list and wait until it is available.

Why doesn’t the library buy every bestselling title in eBook format? EBooks are less expensive than print books, why doesn’t the library own more eBooks?

Not all publishers will sell eBooks to libraries. We are unable to purchase any titles published by Simon & Schuster, Scholastic, and Macmillan and their respective imprints. Currently, Hachette only sells their older titles to libraries. HarperCollins requires that we purchase a new copy of a title after 26 checkouts. Penguin allows us to purchase a license of titles six months after publication. But the lease is for one year and then the title expires. Budget is a consideration as well. Random House and Hachette titles cost approximately 300% more in eBook format. So while you may see a price of $12.99 on the Internet, we may have to pay as much as $40 - $90 for the same title. Of course, the deal 3M has with the publisher today may not be the same deal tomorrow. EBooks are an ever-changing battleground for libraries, publishers, authors, and consumers. My device is compatible, how do I install the app?

Below are several how-to guides for installing the 3M Cloud Library app on your device. You will need an active Internet connection to download the app (wi-fi, 3G, etc).

  • Samsung Galaxy Tab, Toshiba Thrive, Google Nexus, etc
  • laptops, netbooks, desktop computers
  • You will need this version to transfer eBooks to your basic eInk Nook, Kobo, or Sony eReaders.
  • Nook Color, Nook Tablet, Nook HD, Nook HD+

How do I use this service if my device is not compatible?

If you have an Android-based tablet that is not compatible, you can try downloading a Reading app onto your device. The Kansas State Library has instructions here:  http://bit.ly/U2uEGy

If you have a regular eReader and the 3M software will not recognize it for transfer, try these instructions: http://bit.ly/U2uFdG

I have a Kindle, can I use the 3M Cloud Library?

Unfortunately, those with basic eInk Kindle devices cannot transfer 3M Cloud Library eBooks to their device. Please realize that Kindles are more locked down than other eReaders and no lending library can create compatibility until Amazon allows it. So far, this is not the case for 3M Cloud Library. If you would like to let Amazon know that as a Pinal County resident you would like to be able to use 3M Cloud Library with your Kindle, please email them at kindle-feedback@amazon.com.

If you own a Kindle Fire, you may be able to download the 3M Cloud Library app to your device using these instructions: http://www.3m.com/us/library/eBook/kindle.html

I just bought a new eReader/tablet, where should I start?

Please realize it is your responsibility to learn the functions of your device and to keep it updated. Below are links to support sites for the most commonly used device companies. All of these sites will allow you access to a copy of the manual online, and help you learn how to update the device's software current. Many tablets and eReaders are sophisticated enough to either prompt you to download an update or do it automatically, but not all.

• Nook Support
• Apple Support
• Sony eReader Support
• Pandigital Support
• Kobo Reader

Do books expire on my eReader?

Yes. Each book file is transferred with a "due date" attached. The book should not work on your device past the due date. Expired book files do not delete from your device automatically. If you need to learn how to delete a book from your device, follow the instructions below.

How do I delete a book from my eReader when I’m finished?

While this will vary slightly by device, the general idea is the same.

  • Plug your eReader into the computer.
  • When the AutoPlay dialog box comes up, choose "Open device to view files." If the AutoPlay box does not appear, go to Start-->My Computer, and click on the device.
  • Click into the storage on your device, and into the folder on the device where the eBook is stored (on many devices this folder is called Digital Editions). Delete the file for the book.

The 3M Cloud Library app is prompting me to update the software, should I do this and why?

If the 3M Cloud Library mobile app or PC app is prompting you to update the software, accept the update. 3M is making improvements to their software on a regular basis and will issue an update every month or so. To ensure that the software or app works properly, it will be necessary to update the software each time it prompts you to do so.

How do I know if I missed an update to my software or app?

Android and Apple mobile apps - checking your App Store or Google Play for an update is a quick way to be sure! If you think you’ve missed an update for the PC App, please check our 3M eBook page.

I lost my app store log-in, so I can't download the 3M app. What should I do?

Please see your app store's help:

I cannot access the eBook I checked out, what’s the problem?

Before leaving a wi-fi area or 3G/4G hotspot, be sure the eBook has downloaded completely by opening it at least once.

Why can’t I access the Cloud Library?

  • Please check to make sure that you are using the latest version of the software:
      - PC App = 1.33
      - iOS = 1.29
      - Android = 1.28
  • Please verify that you have network connectivity
  • Please verify that you entered your log-in id and password correctly
  • Please verify that you do not have any outstanding fines or fees with your library that would block you from gaining access to your library account.

The PC App software suddenly will not open, work properly, or gives error "unable to open 3MCloudLibrary.exe." What’s going on?

The best thing here is to do a full uninstall of 3M Cloud Library, and install a fresh copy of the software. Your checkouts (and other account information) are on the 3M server and will not be lost.

I have a new eReader that I want to download 3M Cloud Library books to but it says it can’t download to my device. What should I do?

This is the error where 3M Cloud Library can connect to the device and shows the green "download to device" buttons for the eBooks, but then gives the simple error message of "unable to download to device." 3M Cloud Library uses Adobe technology as a base. If your eReader (like a Nook) is new, it may never have encountered an Adobe ID before, and needs to be authorized by one. Here is how to make this happen:

  1. If you have Adobe Digital Editions on your computer, open it and plug in the eReader.
      - Do not have ADE? http://adobe.ly/Qgf9vI
  2. The eReader should show up under "Shelves" on the right side. If your Nook has not been connected to ADE before, it will want to authorize it now. Allow it to do this.
  3. Reopen the 3M Cloud Library and retry the transfer.

My eReader is not recognized by the 3M software, how can I still access my eBook?

Some eReaders have software that blocks transfers from the 3M Cloud Library for PC.  The newer Sony eReaders have this problem. Here is a way to work around the problem. Note: this will not work for basic eInk Kindles.

Please check these things before giving up on a regular 3M Cloud Library transfer:

  • Device is turned on and properly connected to the computer.
  • Device is fully updated - a missed update to your device's software would cause it to not perform properly.

Set Up on the Computer

  • Make sure Adobe Digital Editions is installed. Do not have it? If not, click here: http://adobe.ly/Qgf9vI
  • Authenticate Adobe Digital Editions with your personal Adobe ID. Get an Adobe ID if you do not have one: http://adobe.ly/QgebiS
  • Download the 3M Cloud Library software--this is under "Getting Started" on our this 3M Cloud Library Tutorial page. Learn to use the computer app and check out a book. NOTE: as you have authenticated your computer with the Adobe ID first, 3M Cloud should use this ID as well.

Transfer to the Device

  • Connect your device to the computer.
  • In the 3M software choose the "My Books" tab and open the book you wish to transfer. This makes sure that the book is downloaded to your computer, and the adobe authentication is applied to it.
  • On your computer, pull up "My Documents->My Digital Editions." Any epub book downloaded on your computer should be stored here.
  • Move the epub file into the proper folder for eBooks on your reader. (On a Sony there is an eBooks folder under "Media".)
  • Eject your device from the computer.

I’m getting a Digital Rights Management (DRM) or an Adobe ID authorization error on my Android device. What should I do?

If your new tablet or phone came with a reading app already installed, or you use more than one reading app based on Adobe technology, you may get an error message related to DRM (digital rights management) when you attempt to use the 3M Cloud Library app. You do not have to delete the alternate reading app. Try this:

  • Open the alternate reading app.
  • You may be prompted to authenticate the reading app with an Adobe ID. If not, look under the app's settings for this option.
  • Input your Adobe ID - this will give your entire device Adobe authentication. Need an Adobe ID? Get one here. Forgot your Adobe ID? Retrieve it here.
  • For Android users: Clear the 3M Cloud Library's application cache before opening the app again. (How to clear app cache)

My app is frozen, blank, or glitching. How do I make it work?

iPad/iPhone/iPod Touch:

 - Restart the app, close down other apps:

  • Double-tap the home key of your device.
  • This should bring up a row of apps across the bottom that are currently running on the device. Hold down one of the icons until the apps start to “wiggle.” Each should have a red minus sign -- use the minus sign to force close the 3M Cloud Library app and any other app that you are not currently using (frees up processing power).
  • Tap the home key to exit this mode.
  • Restart your device (hold down the power button, power off then restart).
  • Reopen your 3M Cloud Library app.

 - Uninstall:

  • If the above does not solve the issue, the best thing to do is uninstall the app and reinstall. Your checkouts, etc, are stored on the 3M server and will not be lost.
  • Hold down on the 3M Cloud Library app until it begins to "wiggle."
  • A black X button should have appeared on the upper left corner of the app.  Tap this to delete the app.
  • Tap your home key to exit deletion mode.
  • Reinstall the 3M Cloud Library from your app store.

Android:

 - Clear your application cache & force stop:

  • From your home screen, access your "Settings."
  • Select "Applications" then "Manage Applications" (some versions of Android will skip Applications).
  • Now choose the "3M Cloud Library" from the list of installed apps.
  • Tap "Force Stop" then "Clear Cache."
  • Return to your home screen.  Access the 3M Cloud Library and see if this has solved the problem.
  • If not, restart your device.

 - Uninstall:

  • If the above does not work, we recommend uninstalling the app and reinstalling it. The uninstall button for the app is on the same screen as the Clear Cache and Force Close options. Reinstall from your Google Play store.

Why doesn’t the Cloud Library meet my visual needs on my Apple device?

The text size options on the 3M Apple App do not yet allow for a large enough text to accommodate the visually disabled. We understand that this is a huge issue and 3M is working on the issue.

However, the Kansas State Library has instructions on their website for an alternative method to transfer 3M Cloud Library eBooks to your iPad. Visit this site for instructions: http://bit.ly/T0heb3

Does the 3M Cloud Library offer audio books?

No. However, you can download audio books from our OneClick Digital service: http://bit.ly/PCOneClick

I can’t log-in through the Browsing Website, what’s going on?

If you know that your card is not expired and that you have entered the log-in information correctly, we recommend clearing your temporary internet files/browser cache. This is the cause of most non-typo log-in errors. (Browsing Website = http://bit.ly/pcebooks)

Clear Temp Internet Files

    • Clearing your temporary internet files solves log-in problems, file download issues, and other common internet troubles.
    • With the exception of the mobile device instructions at the very end, all of these instructions take place in the actual internet browser.

    • Click Delete under "Browsing History.”
    • Click Delete Files under "Temporary Internet Files.”
    • Click Yes on the Delete Files dialog box.
    • Click Close and then OK.
  • Mozilla Firefox
    • Click Tools in the upper toolbar
    • Select Clear Recent History.
    • Select the Time Range to clear (drop-down menu). Select "Everything" to clear all cache.
    • Click Details to choose what history elements to clear (cache, cookies, etc…).
