Affordable Care Act and Health Insurance Marketplace Resources


The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (ACA) is a United States federal statute that was signed into law in March 2010.

Under the ACA, individuals will be required to maintain minimum essential coverage. Individuals who do not have minimum essential coverage can read about options and exceptions here.

The U.S. Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services have provided a webpage called the “Health Insurance Marketplace” which assists individuals, families, and small businesses in finding affordable health care options. On October 1st, 2013, open enrollment begins.

Resources for individuals, families, and small businesses:

  • Rural Health Information Hub (RHIhub) - The nation’s rural health information source. Website offers online library, coverage of rural issues, state guides, toolkits, program models, and more. Provides customized assistance by phone or email. Funded by the Federal Office of Rural Health Policy.
  • AZ Hospital Compare - While not ACA affiliated, this resources issued by the Arizona Department of Health Services, is highly useful for finding information on hospital care, quality, charges, and costs. Based upon inpatient data sets from 2011.

  • Health Insurance Marketplace Resources - Designed for professionals (including  librarians) who are interested in learning about the Marketplace and helping people apply. The site includes PowerPoint presentations, fact sheets, brochures, talking points and more.
