PINAL COUNTY, AZ (8/15/2013) – What does it mean to be a good parent? Every child needs support and support takes many forms. Love, encouragement, and emotional support are important, but financial security is vital too. This month has been designated Child Support Awareness Month to highlight the importance of responsible, engaged parenthood.

At the office of the Clerk of the Superior Court (COSC) in Pinal County, Judicial Office Manager Lisa Porter explains how the COSC helps children by overseeing, with the Child Support team, the 100-plus cases that cross her desk per month. “We work not only with parents themselves but also with the Attorney General’s office because many times there are very strict timelines,” she said. “While we are not involved with enforcement, we provide critical support to enforcement agencies.”

“Sometimes marriages end, but being a parent does not. The adversarial stance that can permeate a divorce could be harmful if carried over into the ongoing job of parenting,” said Clerk Roche, a father of three and a foster parent. According to Governor Brewer’s spokesperson, Marjorie Cook, there has been a major change in the view of child support arrearage.

“At the highest levels, the focus regarding child support has changed from campaigns that were negative and punitive…and it’s a change for the better,” stated Clerk Roche. Clarence H. Carter, who is the Director of the Arizona Department of Economic Security (DES) has instituted a holistic approach with the emphasis on being a “safety net.” The agency is committed to lending a helping hand to families and aligning resources with true need.

The Division of Child Support Services (DCSS) uses the tag line, Parents Engaged At Every Stage for a very good reason. While Mother’s Day and Father’s Day come just once a year, Children’s Day is every day for parents who want the best for their child.
