SAN MANUEL, AZ – The guardrails that stand along Veterans Memorial Boulevard (Highway 76) have seen their share of traffic since they were installed in the 1950’s.
“Can you imagine how many shift changes these things have seen over the years?” asked Supervisor Pete Rios as he inspected one of the rails along Veterans Memorial Boulevard west of San Manuel. “These have been the silent guardians of this road for people travelling from San Manuel to the mine, to Tucson or to parts unknown.”
The District 1 Supervisor announced on Monday that due to age and wear, the guardrails along Veterans Memorial Boulevard will be changed out by Pinal County.
“The new guardrails are designed to modern specifications for safety,” Supervisor Rios said. “There will be safer end sections on the replacements along with additional guardrails.”
Supervisor Rios said that construction to replace the guardrails begins on Tuesday, September 1 and proceed in phases through Monday, November 30.
“Veterans Memorial Boulevard will remain open to local traffic, but expect some delays due to construction,” Supervisor Rios warned. “There will also be traffic control devices in place. We ask that people take an extra step of caution while construction crews are working.”
