Footprints matter To Us - soroptimist International of Gold Canyon cleaned up Peralta Trails area on January 15, 2011.
January 21, 2012 - Soroptimist International of Gold Canyon’s (SIGC) 3rd annual cleanup of State land adjacent to the Peralta development a great success.
“The areas which were cleared of debris in the past three years, are mostly staying pristine - the ultimate goal of this project. This year the area broadened to include additional problem areas as far as Entrada del Oro off of El Camino Viejo,” commented Sue Schaffer, Project Coordinator for this SIGC event. The work is far from finished, however. Unfortunately, the remoteness of this area allows uncaring individuals to litter our otherwise pristine deserts surroundings with all kinds of debris – tires, household trash, couches, and a multitude of unwanted items. By broadening the scope of this year’s volunteer effort, additional dump sites and target shooting locations have been identified.
SIGC invites you to participate in an event guaranteed to make you feel good – ‘Footprints Matter to Us’. They are looking for volunteers, equipment, trailers and support vehicles (or horses) the day of the event. Come help clean the desert surrounding our beautiful community and make YOUR footprints matter. For further information, please visit the website www.footprintsmatter.org or call 480-983-2171.

Battery Recycling | Every year, the portable rechargeable power industry produces millions of rechargeable battery packs to power products like cordless tools, cellular and cordless phones, laptop computers, digital cameral, two-way radios, camcorders, and remote control toys. Find out more about recycling your old rechargeable batteries, used cell phones, and battery packs at Call2Recycle.
Rechargeable Battery Recycling Corporation (RBRC) is a non-profit organization which promotes recycling of portable rechargeable batteries and old cell phones. RBRC recycles the following battery chemistries: Nickel Cadmium (Ni-Cd), Nickel Metal Hydride (Ni-MH), Lithium Ion (Li-ion) and Small Sealed Lead* (PB). Check out RBRC's wesite to find your nearest drop off site. | Disposing of left over paint and materials | Paint Hardener must be added to paint before it will be accepted at a landfill. A paint hardener offers the environmentally safe alternative. Most landfills do not accept latex paint in a liquid form, so save yourself time and money by simply adding a paint hardener to your paint before disposing of it. Check with your local Paint & Hardware store for availability of this product or read more on the paint hardeners and how to properly dispose of paint at Squidoo.com. | Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) | When choosing, using, storing, or disposing of Household Hazardous Waste (HHW):
- Consider less-toxic alternatives. Common products like baking soda, vinegar and lemon juice can be used for a variety of household cleaning projects. Check the internet for ideas and recipes.
- Buy only what you need. Share leftovers with friends and neighbors, but use caution. Some pesticides deteriorate over time and can become even more toxic.
- Keep products in their original containers. Remember: never, ever mix products !
- Properly store all hazardous waste. Keep away from children and animals. Find the nearest facility that will accept hazardous waste and ask what their requirements are. When transporting to the acceptable facility for disposal, put the product in your trunk or pickup bed. Load the vehicle just before leaving to minimize the buildup of fumes.
| More About Oil & Filter Recycling | Oil doesn’t wear out, it just gets dirty! Oil is a renewable resource that can be re-refined into a clean, reusable product. This helps decrease our dependency on foreign oil and helps the environment, too. If you change your own oil, do it right! Locations with the “Recycle Used Oil” sign may take the used oil. To learn more about used motor oil collection and recycling locations near you, go to recycling.html. Don’t forget to ask if they take the filter—filters can be recycled, too. |
