On August 8, 2001, Sgt. Hausman and Cpl. Vargas were traveling southbound on State Route 79 when they saw a plume of black smoke. As they drove to the smoke, they saw a vehicle engulfed in flames alongside the roadway. Sgt. Hausman and Cpl. Vargas ran to the burning vehicle and found two paraplegic females trapped inside. They reached into the burning vehicle and pulled both females, who otherwise would have had no avenue to escape from the vehicle, to safety. Thus Sgt. Hausman and Cpl. Vargas saved the women’s lives by placing themselves in grave danger and pulling the women from the blazing vehicle.
