The equestrian unit was one of the first posse units organized by Sheriff Roger Vanderpool. It provides horsepower as well as manpower for a variety of law enforcement functions including search and rescue, traffic and the county fair as well as large events like Country Thunder.
New members typically complete both the Posse Basic Academy Course and a variety of mounted officer training. A member is required to have a horse plus a means to transport the horse to remote locations in the county.
Besides the background check for riders, horses must respond to a rider’s command in difficult conditions including large crowded areas, areas with loud noises and in rocky, steep terrain.
