Three Months; 1,000 Adoptions – Can Pinal County Animal Care and Control Win the Rachael Ray $100K Challenge
Date: 5/28/2014

FLORENCE – The goal for Animal Care and Control is set: to accomplish 1,000 adoptions of animals from their shelter in a three month period.

From June 1 to August 31, Pinal County’s Animal Care and Control staff is going to be focused on getting as many dogs and cats in a loving home in order to win the Rachael Ray $100K Challenge.

“The challenge is a joint effort between the ASPCA and TV host Rachael Ray to save as many animals in shelters as possible,” said Animal Care and Control Director Kaye Dickson. “The goal is to adopt out as many animals as you can between June and August.”

According to the challenge website, fifty shelters are in the competition to win $600,000 in prizes with a $100,000 grand prize.

“The idea is to increase your adoption numbers from last year,” Dickson said. “Our 1,000 adoptions is a very lofty goal, but I sincerely believe we can do it. If we adopt out 300 more than we did this time last year we would win $5,000.”

What would the Animal Care and Control shelter do with the $100,000 grand prize?

“It would go toward spay, neuter, micro chipping programs and outreach education to focus on responsible pet ownership,” Dickson quickly replied.

While the staff at Animal Care and Control are still planning on events to help increase numbers, one event is already planned. The shelter at 1150 South Eleven Mile Corner Road in Casa Grande is planning on being open on Sunday, June 1 (the day the challenge begins), from 8:00 AM until 5:00 PM, and staying open for 24 hours on Friday, June 27

“We are still coming up with ideas,” Dickson said. “We want to make sure we are visible and that people think adoption before shopping for a new pet.”
