On Saturday, September 21st, 2013 at 11:38 p.m. deputies responded to the reported stabbing of a 14-year-old male victim in the 600 block of South Tusa Road, Maricopa.

As deputies arrived on scene, they could see a large gathering of people was breaking up. Deputies located a 14-year-old male victim lying on the ground with stab wound to his stomach and another 13-year-old male victim was leaning on a mailbox post with a stab wound to his arm.

Medics arrived on scene and began treating the victims. Both victims told deputies they did not know who stabbed them but described the suspect as a Hispanic male wearing a grey plaid shirt and jeans. The victims claimed the suspect walked up to them and began stabbing them for no reason.

Deputies were not able to locate the suspect but interviewed several other individuals at the scene. Nobody at the scene was able to provide a name of the suspect.

The 14-year-old victim was transported to a hospital by air ambulance where he went into surgery. He is currently listed in stable condition but will be required to stay in the hospital for a length of time while he recovers. The 13-year-old victim was transported by ground ambulance to a hospital where he was treated and received six stitches to his arm.

Detectives from our Criminal Investigations Bureau took over the investigation.

On September 26th detectives determined through follow up interviews the possible suspect was Jonathan Zavala-Campa (age 23 of Maricopa).

Sheriff Paul Babeu stated, “According to witnesses, Jonathan was intoxicated and said he wanted to get into something. He approached the young victims who he did not know and stabbed them with a knife. After stabbing the victims, Jonathan admitted to detectives, he fled the scene and attempted to hide the knife. Thankfully deputies and medical staff arrived on scene quickly and were able to get the victims to the hospital for help.”

Jonathan Zavala-Campa was arrested and booked into the Pinal County Adult Detention Center for two counts of Aggravated Assault involving a Dangerous Crime against a Child.
