PINAL COUNTY, Ariz. – On Friday, May 31st, 2013 at 9:49 p.m., a Pinal County Sheriff’s Deputy made a traffic stop that resulted in a pursuit of two suspects armed with a loaded rifle.

The Pinal County Sheriff Deputy was following a gray 1998 Mercury sedan westbound on Interstate-8. The deputy observed the driver commit several moving traffic violations so he initiated a stop near mile-marker 158. The vehicle pulled to the right side of the roadway and came to a complete stop.

Before the deputy could get out of his vehicle and approach, the driver accelerated westbound. The deputy initiated a pursuit and chased after the vehicle. The pursuit ended a short distance away when the driver of the Mercury drove into the center median and stopped.

The doors to the vehicle opened and a Hispanic male driver and Hispanic male passenger fled from the vehicle into the darkness on foot. As the deputy approached the vehicle, he observed a “High-Point 9mm rifle” near the front passenger seat. The rifled was loaded with a round in the chamber and a full magazine.

Also inside of the vehicle was a baggie of cocaine, several gallons of water and numerous cans of food. The location in which this vehicle was stopped is a known area used by smugglers who are involved with drug and human trafficking. The two suspects who fled from the vehicle were not located.

The vehicle, the rifle and cocaine were all impounded as evidence.

Sheriff Paul Babeu stated, “Our Pinal County families still continue to be forced to live with drug and human smuggling and the crimes associated with it as a result of an unsecured border. Could you imagine if these cases were occurring everyday in Washington, D.C.? I imagine then we would finally see some real efforts to secure the border.”
