Magma Road Opens in San Tan Valley Creating Important New Route Between Hunt Hwy and Gary Road
Date: 9/27/2021

Assistant Pinal County Engineer Celeste Garza opens the ceremony with details about the project, how the much-needed roadway will have many benefits, and with great teamwork, it only took half a year. "Just six months ago there was a pile of dirt where we are standing today," expressed Garza with pride. "This was made possible due to supportive leadership, great relationships with design consultants and contractors, and a Public Works Team who take pride in providing quality projects to citizens on time and within budget.”

The project’s civil design was originally completed by TYLIN International in late 2020 and in March 2021 Sunland Asphalt began construction. The project is a two-lane connection that is one mile in length. There is 580 linear feet of a pre-cast con-arch culvert that is 60 feet in width that will take stormwater runoff from the west to the east into a basin located on the other end of the roundabout. The new section of Magma Road will improve response time for emergency services and decrease commute time for citizens of San Tan Valley. The total cost of the project was approximately six million dollars.

"We will do our best to ensure the citizens this will not turn into a racetrack," Sheriff Lamb pledges. "We cannot just have one ingress/egress access in this community, this is much needed as we continue to grow in this area."

The 1/2 cent sales tax in Pinal County helped fund this project. Buying gas within Pinal County to fill up your tank ensures more projects like Magma Road can be possible.

"I remember the start of all this. I received a call from the superintendent from Florence Schools with concerns about emergency response and being able to bus kids in the area. We took a drive and we realized something needs to be done," recalls District 2 Supervisor Goodman. "I'm very grateful for all the hard work and effort made to work together for the common good which is for the people and doing it all in 6 months, that's pretty dang fast!"
