Pinal County Board Supervisors Adopts the Countywide Strategic Transportation Safety Plan |
On December 4, 2019, the county's first strategic transportation safety plan was adopted. The draft plan and findings were presented to the Board of Supervisors during a Work Session by the study team on November 13, 2019. The plan is the framework to improve traffic safety and reduce the number of fatal and serious crashes on roadways countywide.

With 530 fatal crashes on roadways within Pinal County between 2008 and 2017, the Sun Corridor Metropolitan Planning Organization, in cooperation with Central Arizona Governments, Maricopa Association of Governments, and Pinal County, developed the comprehensive Strategic Transportation Safety Plan for the cities, towns, and tribal communities located within Pinal County. The goal of the study was to identify crash trends and safety issues, design strategies to reduce the number of crashes, and implement solutions for safer travel in the county.

A key component of the plan was a prioritized list of projects that were developed to pursue federal Highway Safety Improvement Program (HSIP) funds. Pinal County was awarded $13 million of HSIP funding for thirteen projects to implement between Fiscal Years 2021-2024.
