Field Training Officer Program

The mission of the Pinal County Sheriff’s Office Field Training Program is to provide a positive and effective learning environment to ensure quality, standardized instruction in order to prepare officers in training with the necessary knowledge to perform the essential duties and functions of a solo capable deputy.

The FTO program consists of four phases. The first three phases are four weeks each and the last phase is two weeks. The Officer in Training will be graded daily on their ability to do the job of a Pinal County deputy. The FTO program is a performance-based, structured, hands-on training that teams the OIT with their FTO to give a one-on-one teacher-student learning environment.

Training Unit
The Pinal County Sheriff’s Office Training Unit is responsible for all firearms qualifications and training. The unit is also tasked with the annual training and tracking of training for all sworn personnel to insure compliance with Arizona Post and assist with teaching at the academy. PCSO added a Post Academy just over a year ago, which provides additional training to new deputies after they graduate the academy and before they go on FTO.

The PCSO Training Unit also coordinates with other agencies to provide training or assist in training with the smaller local agencies.
