About Tim Kanavel

Tim is the current Economic Development Director for Pinal County having been hired in November 2009 to coordinate and stimulate economic activities within the fast growing county. Reporting directly to the County Manager and working closely with the County Board of Supervisors, Tim’s current focus, besides business recruitment, marketing, retention and assisting the various towns, cities and other economic development entities in the county, is the planning, development and implementation of economic policies, programs and relationships that will establish all of Pinal County as a major economic player in the Sun Corridor.

Tim graduated from the University of Arizona with a B.S. Degree in Regional Development in 1997. His career track over the years has taken him from working as a driller in the oilfields of Ohio, Pennsylvania and West Virginia, and upon graduating from the UofA to the old Greater Tucson Economic Council (now Sun Corridor Inc.) as a research analyst, to the Arizona Department of Commerce (now the Arizona Commerce Authority) as a project manager, to private enterprise in aerospace at the Tucson Airport as the HR Director, to the Wickenburg Regional Economic Development Partnership as president, and lastly to his present position as the Economic Development Director at Pinal County.

In April 2004, he was presented with the prestigious Arizona Association for Economic Development’s “Economic Developer of the Year Award – Large Community” while working for the Arizona Department of Commerce. In April 2017, Tim was presented the “Economic Developer of the Year Award – Medium Community” - this time as an employee of Pinal County - the first person in the State to have ever received the award twice. In 2018, Pinal County’s Economic Development Department was awarded AAED’s “Economic Organization of the Year Award - Medium Community.”

In the late 1980’s and all thru the 1990s, Tim received various Boy and Cub scouting leadership awards. In 2006 Tim was inducted into the American Youth Football Coaches Hall of Fame and also the American Youth Football Donor Wall of Fame.

Tim is the proud father of 3 sons, the oldest just recently retiring from the Air Force and living in Texas with his family, the middle son currently serving in the Ohio National Guard (retiring this year) and living with his family near Cleveland and the youngest son living in Tucson with his family. Tim also has 4 grandchildren.
